Standard Work Combination Sheet (WCS) | Definition & Template

A Standard Work Combination Sheet (WCS), also known as a Work Combination Table or Standardarbeits-Kombinationsblatt, is a lean manufacturing document that shows the sequence and timing of manual work, machine work, and walking for a single operator at a workstation. It uses a Gantt-style timeline to visualize how human and machine activities overlap, making it essential for understanding and optimizing the interaction between operators and automated equipment.

How to Create

To create a Standard Work Combination Sheet: (1) Observe and record the complete work cycle at the station. (2) List each work element in sequence. (3) Classify each element as Manual (operator hands-on), Machine (automatic cycle), Walk (operator movement), or Wait. (4) Measure the time for each element. (5) Plot the elements on a horizontal timeline showing their sequence and overlap. (6) Identify opportunities to reduce wait time by reorganizing work elements or adjusting machine cycles. Tools like Yamazo Studio generate WCS documents automatically from video analysis with multi-track support. By convention the timeline uses a distinct line style for each element type — a solid line for manual work, a dashed line for automatic machine time, and a wavy line for walking — so the overlap between operator and machine is visible at a glance.

Example

An operator at a CNC machining station performs the following cycle: Load workpiece (12s manual), Start machine (2s manual), Machine cycle (45s automatic), During machine cycle: walk to inspection station and check previous part (30s walk + manual), Return and unload (15s manual + walk). The WCS shows that the 45-second machine cycle overlaps with the 30-second inspection task, and the operator has 15 seconds of available time that could be used for additional tasks.
